Preteens and Teens

Is your teenager shutting you out leaving you scared about what is going on with them?

Has your teenager changed the way they interact with you?

Are you worried that they are experimenting with drugs or sex?

The teen years are difficult ones - that is not news to anyone.  Teenagers try and hide their emotional distress unlike some younger children.  Your teen may no longer look for comfort from you because "it isn't cool" but they desperately want your approval and love. I work with teenagers and young adults on issues such as identity, relationships, parental separation and school anxiety.  I relate to teenagers and young adults on their level and go at their pace. Sometimes it helps to have a separate adult work with your teenager who does not fit their "parent image".

I work closely with parents to collaborate around understanding the child and what might help them outside of therapy, at home or at school.  Although all therapy is confidential, I do share with parents my understanding of the teenager's struggles and the main themes that emerge in therapy.  My approach is that of fundamental respect for a parent's understanding of their teen, as well as a deep appreciation for the difficulties and complexities parenting itself presents.
